Diabetes Care in Salem, Oregon
Steady routines, careful medication and blood sugar monitoring, and caregivers who know the warning signs.
What diabetes care looks like in a small home
Diabetes affects how the body uses sugar. For older adults, the goal is usually steady blood sugar: avoiding dangerous lows and highs while keeping meals and daily life as normal as possible.
What families should know
Low blood sugar can look different
In older adults, confusion, sleepiness or dizziness can signal a low, not only sweating or shakiness. Caregivers are taught to check and respond quickly and to call the doctor.
Plans are individual
Targets and medications are set by your loved one’s doctor and may be relaxed for frail older adults. We follow the doctor’s orders.
Other conditions matter
Diabetes often comes with heart, kidney or memory conditions. We look at the whole person, not just blood sugar.
Questions to ask any home about diabetes care
- Who gives insulin, and how are they trained?
- How often are blood sugars checked, and who reviews the results?
- What do you do for a low blood sugar, and when do you call the doctor?
- How are meals and snacks planned around the diabetes plan?
- How do you work with the doctor and the nurse?
- What would lead to a move, and how much notice would we get?
When a home may not be the right fit
If blood sugar becomes hard to control, or a resident’s condition becomes complex, unstable or unpredictable beyond what the home can safely provide, Oregon rules allow a move with written notice. We contact the doctor right away when something changes, and we talk with families early.
Common questions
Can you manage insulin?
Yes. When insulin is ordered, trained caregivers give it with oversight from a registered nurse, as Oregon allows.
Can residents with diabetes still enjoy favorite foods?
We follow the doctor’s plan and work with each resident on choices they enjoy.
What if blood sugar becomes hard to control?
We contact the doctor right away and review with you whether the home can still meet your loved one’s needs.
Want to talk about your loved one’s needs?
Tell us about them and we will tell you honestly whether we are a fit.
